Searching for companies

How to run a Company Search: what to paste in, how each filter works, Traditional Search, and your search history.

This article walks through running a Company Search, from writing your search to using filters and Traditional Search.

1. Open Company Search

Select Company Search from the left sidebar.

2. Describe what you're looking for

Paste text into the search box. You don't need special wording. You can enter:

  • A research or patent abstract, full patent text, or claims

  • A one-pager or research article

  • A few keywords or an industry

  • A company name, to find competitors or similar companies

The box takes up to 100,000 characters. Not sure where to start? Copy one of the examples under You can try....

When you paste a technology or research description, Potential Use Cases may appear below the box. Select one to focus the search on that use case.

3. Set your filters

  • Location: only include companies in the places you pick. You can choose a continent, country, state, or city. Narrow locations can reduce your results, so start broad.

  • Company Size: Small, Medium, or Large. We estimate size from revenue, funding, and headcount.

  • Revenue: Small ($0 to $10M), Medium ($10M to $100M), or Large ($100M+).

  • Intent: why you want to reach these companies. Choose Licensing, Sponsoring Research, Recruiting, Philanthropy, or Fundraising, or leave it on Any. This filters out companies that don't fit your goal.

  • Organization Type: Company (the default) gives you private and public companies. Foundation gives you nonprofits. Any gives you private and public companies, nonprofits, universities, and government agencies.

  • Exclude: leave out companies you don't want to see, such as existing partners. Search for them by name or upload a CSV.

4. Find companies

Click Find Companies. Results start appearing within seconds and keep filling in while the search runs. When it finishes, click Load More Companies to find more.

Traditional Search

Turn on Traditional Search at the top of the page for a standard search with exact results. It doesn't match or score companies. Filter by:

  • Name: full or partial company name

  • Location: by region, including a ZIP or postal code followed by its country, or by distance from a US ZIP code or a city

  • Industries: one or more industries

  • Company Size: employee-count ranges

  • Revenue: Small, Medium, or Large

Results update as you change filters. Use the control at the bottom of the table to show more results per page.

Search history

Every search is saved on the History tab. Open one to see its results again.
